New Jersey resident Sean McDermott, age 34, of Hoboken, was arrested on Wednesday, March 6 following a pursuit that began in Westchester and ended in Putnam County, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office announced on Monday, March 11.
According to authorities, at around 12:15 p.m. on the day of McDermott's arrest, a vehicle that fled a traffic stop in Elmsford traveled into Putnam County on Oregon Road after escaping efforts to stop it conducted by several police agencies in Westchester.
Investigators with the Sheriff's Office's Narcotics Enforcement Unit soon found the car traveling north on Peekskill Hollow Road. However, it then briefly entered the town of Yorktown before entering Putnam Valley on the northbound Taconic State Parkway.
The unregistered vehicle, which had switched plates, then finally came to a stop on the Taconic State Parkway just north of the Bryant Pond Road exit in Putnam Valley. The driver, McDermott, was taken into custody without any further incident.
Authorities then discovered that McDermott was allegedly in possession of a quantity of methamphetamine before charging him with the following:
- Fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance;
- Second-degree reckless endangerment;
- Third-degree unlawfully fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle;
- Second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation.
Following his arrest, the Sheriff's Office also discovered that McDermott had an outstanding extraditable felony bench warrant out of Pennsylvania for failing to appear for a drug arrest. Pennsylvania State Police soon confirmed that this warrant was still active, leading the Sheriff's Office to also process McDermott as a fugitive from justice, authorities said.
McDermott was later arraigned in the Town of Kent Court and was remanded to the Putnam County Correctional Facility pending an extradition hearing for Pennsylvania.
